Facing Jesus #7 - Herod
Matthew Mark Luke John
Words of Jesus are underlined
This Herod was Herod Antipas, one of the sons of Herod the Great, who tried to kill Jesus as an infant in Bethlehem. Herod Antipas stole away his brother Phillip’s wife, Herodias. When John the Baptist called him on it, Herod had him thrown in prison. Later Herodias and her daughter tricked him into beheading John. How did Herod face Jesus? As a miracle worker? As somebody who reminded him of his guilt and sin?
How do you face Jesus? Are you hoping He works a miracle for you? And if He doesn’t, will you treat Him with contempt.
Jesus Before Herod
They kept insisting, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he started even to here.”
When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean. Finding that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days. Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by him. So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him. The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate. That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Previously, they had been enemies.”
(Luke 23:5–12 CSB17)
Why do you think Jesus didn’t answer Herod? Why didn’t Herod take advantage of this opportunity to kill Jesus? (Luke 13:31-32)
Is there a part of you that would like to see a miracle from Jesus? Would that make you love Him more?
Why do you suppose Herod and Pilate become friends after this?
